Above is a picture of my brother and one of his students in class on Halloween, both wearing costumes. He’s currently teaching English in South Korea.
- Did you see any particularly great costumes this Halloween?
- What did you do to celebrate? Did you dress up?
- Did you choose not to celebrate Halloween? Why?
- Do you think the costumes pictured above are funny and appropriate?

As you probably already know, The People’s Republic of China will celebrate its 60th anniversary on October 1st. The Big Picture has posted a beautiful set of photographs documenting the country’s preparation for this special day. The photograph above shows some of the thousands of citizens who have been rehearsing for the National Day pageant. Take a look at the other photographs and respond with your thoughts on the celebration in general, or on any of the specific images over at The Big Picture.

Australia’s worst dust storm in 70 years caused chaos in Sydney on Wednesday. One of my favourite blogs, The Big Picture, posted a set of stunning photos from the city which are certainly worth viewing. If you haven’t already read about the storm, also check out one of the many news articles on the subject available online.
Questions to Consider
- Have you ever witnessed a similar freak weather event, natural disaster, or serious storm?
- Can you think of one that you have read or heard about?
- What feelings, thoughts, or memories do the photos at The Big Picture evoke?

The Hubble Space Telescope is one of the largest and most powerful telescopes that has ever been created. Used for observing deep space, it was launched into the Earth’s orbit in 1990. In May of this year a mission was sent to the telescope to make repairs and install new and more powerful equipment. The latest pictures from the telescope are some of the highest quality images of space ever taken. I’ve included one of the pictures above, more can be viewed at Hubble’s official site.
If you enjoy the space photography then check out this collection of the year’s best astronomy photographs.
Camilla D’errico is an Italian-Canadian writer and artist who lives and works in Vancouver and was featured in this weekend’s Vancouver Sun. She has created and contributed to a number of comics and graphic novels, and self-publishes her own series, Tampopo.
You can find more information and a gallery of paintings on her official site. Another nice article, where Camilla is described as an “art factory” can be found here. A final, comprehensive interview is offered here if you’re still interested in learning more about her work.
Questions to Consider
-What do you think of her paintings? Is there one you particularly like?
-D’errico’s artwork has a very distinct style quite reminiscent of manga. Are you a fan of manga, or any other types of graphic literature? Do you know someone who is?
-What’s your opinion on manga, comic books, or this style of art? Why do you think manga is so popular today?
